A Week In Uzbekistan

Legend has it that Jews arrived to this Central Asian region with the Assyrians in 722 BC and collectively became known as Bukharian Jews, even though the areas they settled in were some way from the Uzbek city of Bukhara. This is the history we will  be exploring on our week-long trip to Uzbekistan, where we will experience the vibrant culture, customs and cuisine of the Bukharian Jews, which has remained relatively unchanged for 2,000 years. We will also see the exquisite architecture of many madrasas, mausoleums in the capital, Tashkent, Samarkand and other locations on the Silk Road.

Please send expressions of interest to tours@jewishrenaissance.org.uk or marcel.manson@westendtravel.co.uk and you will be sent a reservation form or please apply through the website.

DAY 3: FRIDAY 5TH NOVEMBER

A train will take us to Bukhara, which humans have inhabited for at least five millennia and the city itself has existed for half that time. Given its prominent location along the Silk Road, it has long served as a centre for trade, education, culture and religion.

DAY 4: SHABBAT 06 NOVEMBER

Travellers can enjoy a morning to themselves in Bukhara with choice of Synagogue worship.  After a kosher lunch we will then take a walking tour of the Old City, visiting Magok-i-Attari Mosque – the oldest in the city and which was shared with Jews for worship until a synagogue was built.  We will also see the Ark of Bukhara fortress, Bolo Haouz Mosque, and Chashma-Ayub and Samanid Mausoleums. Dinner will be at a local restaurant.

DAY 5: SUNDAY 07 NOVEMBER

In the morning we will visit the UNESCO World Heritage site Khoja-Gaukushon as well as Caravanserai, the Toki-Sarrafon trade center and the old town center, which dates back to the 16th/17th centuries.  Our tour will also include the Nadir Divan-Begi and Kukaldosh madrasas. After lunch we’ll board the bullet train to the ancient site of Afrasiyab in Samarkand, a historic town founded in the 7th century BC and is considered a melting pot of the world's cultures.

DAY 6: MONDAY 08 NOVEMBER

On day six we’ll continue exploring Samarkand, including stops at Registan, Bibi-Khanym Mosque, Shah-i-Zinda necropolis, Ulugh Beg Observatory and Gur-e-Amir Mausoleum.

DAY 7: TUESDAY 9TH NOVEMBER 2021

After an early breakfast (or takeaway breakfast boxes), we’ll take the 6.35am bullet train to Tashkent. Upon arrival we will do a little sightseeing of the capital, followed by an early lunch and departure to the airport for the flight home (expected to land at London Heathrow at around 8pm).
